Nina Hutwagner takes the helm of Stuttgart's S-Bahn with bold modernisation plans

Stuttgart’s S-Bahn has a new leader after a formal handover at the end of April. Nina Hutwagner took over as chair of the executive board on May 1, 2023. She replaces Matthias Glaub, who had held the position for nearly two years before moving to Munich’s S-Bahn. The transition was marked by a symbolic ceremony on April 28 at the S-Bahn depot in Plochingen. Glaub had steered Stuttgart’s network through key improvements, focusing on operational efficiency and development. His departure opens a new chapter for the regional rail service.

Hutwagner arrives with a strong background in rail operations and digital innovation. She has spent years in leadership roles at Deutsche Bahn, bringing expertise in modernising transport systems. The company has set clear goals for her tenure: strengthening reliability, upgrading infrastructure, and pushing forward with digitalisation. Deutsche Bahn expects the change to build on existing progress. Plans include further modernisation of trains, stations, and passenger services. Hutwagner’s experience aligns closely with these priorities, particularly in integrating new technologies.

Hutwagner’s appointment signals a continued focus on making Stuttgart’s S-Bahn more efficient and future-ready. The network will now work under her direction to enhance daily operations and long-term planning. Deutsche Bahn’s emphasis on digital and infrastructure upgrades remains central to the strategy.
