Ningbo-Zhoushan Port smashes records with 20% container traffic surge in early 2026

Ningbo-Zhoushan Port has recorded strong growth in early 2026, reinforcing its status as a global trade leader. Between January and February, cargo volumes rose by 7.3% compared to the same period last year. Container traffic also surged, climbing nearly 20% in the first two months alone. The port handled 245 million tons of cargo from January to February 2026, up from the previous year. Container throughput reached 7.987 million TEUs during the same period, marking a 19.8% year-on-year increase.

Over the past five years, Ningbo-Zhoushan has cemented its position as the world's busiest container port. In 2025, it processed a record 35.3 million TEUs, surpassing both Shanghai and Singapore. This growth has boosted its role in China's economy, particularly in the Yangtze River Delta region, where it now accounts for over 5% of the country's total container volume. The port's global reach continues to expand. It currently operates more than 300 container shipping routes, connecting over 700 ports across 200 countries and regions.

The latest figures highlight Ningbo-Zhoushan's expanding influence in international trade. With rising cargo and container volumes, the port remains a key driver of China's maritime logistics. Its extensive network and record-breaking throughput further solidify its position as a critical hub for global commerce.
