Nizhny Novgorod bans forest entry as wildfire risk spikes this week
Nizhny Novgorod Oblast faces a heightened wildfire risk from June 2 to 5, 2023. Authorities have imposed strict measures, including a forest entry ban, to prevent blazes in the region’s woodlands and peatlands. A new hotline will also launch to support residents in maintaining fire safety. The Department of Urban Improvement is setting up a dedicated hotline on June 5. It will operate daily from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM, with residents able to call +7 (831) 228-01-68 for guidance on fire prevention in urban forests.
Strict rules are now in place to reduce fire hazards. Residents must avoid burning garden waste, lighting bonfires, or discarding lit cigarettes in wooded areas. Oily rags and glass bottles, which can spark fires, are also banned from forests. In case of a wildfire, the public should immediately contact the fire department. For emergencies, the *EMERCOM of Russia* mobile app provides real-time alerts. If power fails, electric flashlights must be used instead of open flames. Drivers have been warned to keep a safe distance from other vehicles. Sudden braking could create sparks, increasing the risk of fires along roadsides.
The new hotline and safety measures aim to lower wildfire threats during the high-risk period. Residents must follow the rules to avoid accidental blazes in forests and peatlands. The restrictions will remain until conditions improve.
