Nizhny Novgorod cracks down on bus carriers after shocking inspection failures

Transport officials in Nizhny Novgorod carried out surprise checks on city buses in early 2026. The inspections covered routes 34, 47, 85, and 87, uncovering widespread violations among three private carriers. Konka, Trans-NN, and Meshcheryakov & Company now face penalties for failing to meet service standards.

The unannounced review began with six buses on Route 34. Inspectors found dirty exteriors, incorrect route displays, and homemade windshield signs. Some vehicles also lacked surveillance cameras, rear-door validators, driver nameplates, and had torn seating.

On Route 47, all four inspected buses failed compliance. None had rear validators, driver identification, or working cameras. Additional problems included ripped upholstery and broken electronic displays. Route 85 saw three of four buses with unclean exteriors and poor maintenance. The fourth vehicle had minor issues but still fell short of required standards. The worst results came from Route 87, where every one of the seven buses checked violated regulations. Not a single bus displayed reflective route indicators, and most lacked driver ID signs. Regional authorities determined that the three companies repeatedly breached their state contracts. Violations included unreliable service, missed schedules, and failure to maintain vehicles properly.

The carriers now face formal complaints, fines of up to 500,000 rubles each, and possible contract termination. They may also be barred from future transport tenders. Officials have announced plans for ongoing monitoring to enforce service quality across Nizhny Novgorod's bus network.
