Nizhny Novgorod Oblast imposes spring freight restrictions to protect thawing roads

Seasonal restrictions on heavy freight traffic will soon begin in Nizhny Novgorod Oblast. The measures, running from March 23 to April 21, target vehicles with an axle load of 6 tons or more. Officials say the move is necessary to protect roads during the spring thaw period.

The restrictions will cover 1,358 sections of regional and intermunicipal roads. Trucks exceeding the weight limit must avoid these routes unless exempt. Exceptions include international freight, passenger buses, and transport of essential goods like food and medical supplies.

Not all highways will face restrictions. Major routes such as Ryazhsk–Kasimov–Murom–Nizhny Novgorod and Nizhny Novgorod–Shakhunya–Kirov remain open to heavy vehicles. Drivers of affected trucks are advised to use federal highways M7 and R158 as alternatives. Regional authorities and the Russian Ministry of Transport have also recommended detours via designated truck bypasses. These include routes around Nizhny Novgorod and Dzerzhinsk to avoid restricted local roads.

The restrictions aim to prevent road damage caused by heavy vehicles during the thaw. Truck operators must plan routes carefully or risk penalties. Authorities will monitor compliance throughout the four-week period.
