Nizhny Novgorod's revamped cable car sees passenger numbers soar past 2 million
The Nizhny Novgorod-Bor cable car has seen a sharp rise in passengers since its modernisation. After a major upgrade in 2023, the system now carries far more people than before. Recent figures show over 2 million travellers used the service in just one year.
The cable car's capacity was doubled during the 2023 upgrade. Before the changes, it could transport 500 passengers per hour—now it handles 1,000. This boost, along with faster travel times and better comfort, has drawn in more riders.
Annual passenger numbers have climbed steadily since the improvements. In the years before the upgrade, around 1.2 million people used the cable car each year. By 2024 and 2025, that figure jumped to over 2.5 million. The trend continued in April 2025, when the system carried more than 2 million passengers in just 12 months.
The modernised cable car now serves as a key transport link between Nizhny Novgorod and Bor. Higher capacity and smoother operations have made it a popular choice for commuters and tourists alike. The system's usage is expected to remain strong as ridership keeps growing.
