Nizhny Novgorod's tram network set for major expansion and upgrades

EcoProjects LLC has announced plans to expand tram services in Nizhny Novgorod. The project aims to improve public transport access across the city, with key upgrades and new routes under consideration. Modern trams will replace older models as part of the overhaul. Two major route extensions are currently being explored. The first would connect Sormovo’s 7th Microdistrict, a large residential area in need of better transport links. The second proposed route targets Novinki, though this faces hurdles due to the district’s dense development and complex underground utilities.

Work on modernising existing tram infrastructure is already underway. The reconstruction of key tracks is nearly finished, and next year will see the arrival of new rolling stock. Older tram cars will be phased out as the updated models enter service. Additionally, the tram depot and traction substations are scheduled for renovation in 2025. Trams remain a vital transport option in Nizhny Novgorod, offering high passenger capacity and faster travel times. They also bypass traffic congestion in busy districts, making them a reliable choice for daily commuters.

The expansion will bring modern trams and improved routes to more residents. Sormovo’s 7th Microdistrict stands to benefit first, while Novinki’s extension remains under review. Once complete, the upgrades will enhance efficiency and capacity across the city’s tram network.
