NJ TRANSIT expands fleet with 375 new clean-diesel buses from New Flyer

NJ TRANSIT has ordered an additional 375 clean-diesel Xcelsior buses from NFI Group Inc. and New Flyer, expanding their fleet and modernizing public transport in New Jersey. The latest news follows a base contract awarded in early 2024, covering 550 buses. With this new purchase, NJ TRANSIT has now fulfilled that initial commitment, leaving 750 optional buses available for future orders. The agency operates a vast network of bus, rail, and light rail services, with buses handling a significant portion of daily passenger trips.

The Xcelsior model is known for its durability, safety features, and accessibility. Designed for long-term use, these buses provide cost-effective performance while meeting the demands of urban transit. New Flyer, a leader in North American heavy-duty transit buses, has supplied over 35,000 vehicles currently in operation.

NFI's broader mobility solutions extend beyond manufacturing. The company offers infrastructure support, parts and servicing, technology integration, workforce training, and financing options. This ecosystem helps cities like Newark and Trenton upgrade their transit systems efficiently.

This order also supports local manufacturing and job security. By investing in domestically produced buses, NJ TRANSIT ensures taxpayer funds contribute to both service improvements and economic stability.

The 375 new buses will join NJ TRANSIT's fleet as part of a phased replacement plan, with deliveries scheduled for late 2025. The deal reinforces New Flyer's role as a key supplier for public transit agencies across the US. These vehicles will help maintain service quality while reducing the average age of the fleet.
