Norway's Railway Directorate Sets Strategy for Long-Distance, Freight, and Public Local Transport in East Norway

Norway's 2050 Rail Revolution Aims to Cut Emissions and Boost Capacity

Norway’s rail network is set for major changes by 2050 as demand for passenger and freight transport grows. The Norwegian Railway Directorate has released three new reports outlining the future of rail, focusing on capacity, emissions cuts, and land-use efficiency. Officials stress that rail will play a key role in meeting climate and transport goals over the next three decades. The reports highlight a significant rise in transport needs by 2050, particularly in Eastern Norway, where half the country’s jobs are located. To handle this growth, the directorate is exploring a new tunnel from Oslo Central Station to Lysaker, aiming to ease congestion and boost capacity in the region.

The freight strategy underscores rail’s importance for long-distance container shipping and bulk goods transport. Meanwhile, the passenger strategy targets a shift from air to rail travel, especially on long-haul routes. The Oslo-Bergen corridor is seen as the best opportunity to attract more travellers by improving journey times, comfort, and ticket pricing. The plans also address national security, ensuring key rail lines remain operational during military or civil emergencies. Anne Iren Fagerbakke, Director General of the Norwegian Railway Directorate, stated that rail is essential to overcoming these challenges by mid-century. The public will have a chance to weigh in, with a consultation period running from mid-April to mid-June.

The proposed strategies aim to expand rail capacity, reduce emissions, and support Norway’s climate targets. If implemented, the changes could reshape transport across the country, particularly in Eastern Norway. The next step involves gathering public feedback before final decisions are made.
