Construction work on the Nürnberg-Regensburg line is progressing - Nuremberg-Regensburg Railway Gets Major Upgrade by July 2023

Major upgrades are underway on the railway line between Nuremberg and Regensburg. Work began in February 2023 and is progressing as planned after six weeks. The project aims to modernise over 60 kilometres of track bed and improve services for both passengers and freight.

The renovation involves replacing 15 kilometres of rail and 32 sets of points. Crews have also installed over 20 new overhead line masts and laid foundations for more than 1,000 additional supports. Each day, over 2,000 specialists and around 80 large machines operate along the route to keep the project on track.

While trains are suspended, a substitute bus service has been running smoothly. Passengers can track buses in real time through a dedicated replacement service website. The improvements will allow regular train operations to resume once the work is finished. The modernisation is expected to double the number of trains on the line. Currently, up to 80 freight trains pass daily, operating around the clock at 18-minute intervals. The entire project is scheduled for completion by July 10, 2023.

Once finished, the upgraded line will restore regular train services and significantly increase capacity. Freight and passenger trains will run more frequently, improving transport links between Nuremberg and Regensburg. The project remains on schedule, with all major work set to wrap up in early July.
