Oslob's Mainit Port reopens after decade-long neglect, reviving key ferry routes
Mainit Port in Oslob has reopened after years of neglect, restoring a vital ferry link between Cebu, Siquijor and Dumaguete. The revival follows a decade of disrepair caused by typhoon damage and lack of maintenance. Officials now hope the route will drive tourism and trade across the Visayas region. The port’s decline began after typhoon Pablo struck over ten years ago, leaving it unusable. Asian Marine Transport Corp. (AMTC) CEO Paul Rodriguez later took the decision to rehabilitate the facility, bringing it back into service. The project itself was first proposed during the administration of former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.
Currently, the ferry service operates with smaller vessels, offering one daily trip for around 200 passengers. These include both local travellers and foreign tourists. As demand grows, the local government is working closely with ferry operators to maintain safety and reliability. Oslob Mayor Ronald Guaren highlighted the port’s economic potential, stating it would revitalise the town and improve access to nearby destinations. Cebu Governor Pamela Baricuatro also welcomed the reopening, calling it a key step in strengthening regional connectivity. Long-term plans involve extending the route to Panglao, Bohol, creating a broader tourism network.
The restored ferry link now connects Cebu to Siquijor and Dumaguete, with future expansions under consideration. Local authorities and transport operators are preparing for increased passenger numbers. The project aims to support both tourism growth and regional trade in the coming years.
