Overhead line failure near Hanover triggers major train disruptions across Germany
A damaged overhead power line near Hanover caused widespread travel chaos on Tuesday. Trains faced delays, cancellations, and diversions for several hours before repairs were completed. The fault was first reported in the early morning, disrupting long-distance, regional, and S-Bahn services. ICE trains travelling from North Rhine-Westphalia through Hanover to Berlin were among the worst affected. Some were rerouted via Hildesheim and Braunschweig, while others on the Hamburg-Hanover line faced significant hold-ups.
The issue also impacted the IC route from Norddeich Mole to Dresden, as well as services between Hanover and Lehrte. Regional trains and the S-Bahn network experienced knock-on delays due to the overhead line failure.
Repair crews began work at around 1:00 PM. After several hours, engineers confirmed the line had been fixed and the affected route was cleared. Normal service gradually resumed following the completion of repairs. The incident led to multiple cancellations and rerouted trains, affecting thousands of passengers. With the overhead line now repaired, Deutsche Bahn expects services to return to their usual schedules. Further updates will be provided if any lingering delays occur.
