Pāpāmoa East Interchange opens to slash Tauranga commute times
The newly completed Pāpāmoa East Interchange is set to open at the end of March, following a blessing ceremony on the 30th. The $98 million project promises to cut travel times for thousands of residents in the growing Tauranga area. Commuters, including local teachers, have already welcomed the shorter journeys ahead. Construction on the interchange began in July 2022 and wrapped up nearly two years later. During this time, drivers faced reduced speed limits, construction traffic and frequent disruptions. The finished project includes an overbridge across the Tauranga Eastern Link (State Highway 2), new on and off ramps, and upgraded Three Waters infrastructure.
The interchange was designed to support Pāpāmoa's rapid growth, with the local population expected to reach around 40,000 by 2043. NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi covered 51% of the costs, while Tauranga City Council funded the remainder largely through development contributions.
For local residents, the benefits are immediate. Liana Rosie, a teacher at Golden Sands School, said her daily commute would now be at least 15 minutes shorter each way—effectively halving her travel time. Another teacher at the school, Melissa Burgess, shared similar relief, expecting her own commute to drop by 15 minutes in both directions. The new route will also improve connections between Pāpāmoa East, Tauranga city centre, Mount Maunganui and other key destinations.
While the interchange itself is ready, questions remain about toll pricing. A second toll point will be installed between Domain Road and the new interchange, but the NZTA has yet to confirm the exact rates following public consultation. The Pāpāmoa East Interchange opens to the public after a formal blessing on March 30. Commuters will see faster travel times, while the project supports the area's long-term growth. Official toll rates for the new section of the Tauranga Eastern Link remain pending.
