PATH train fares to rise in 2026 as modernisation kicks off

PATH train fares are set to rise as part of a major modernisation effort. From May 4, 2026, the single-ride price will increase from £2.45 to £2.65, with further gradual rises planned until 2029. The changes come alongside service improvements, including restored seven-day operations on all lines. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has confirmed the fare adjustment to fund the £345 million PATH Forward project. This initiative will replace ageing tracks, upgrade switching systems, and introduce new train carriages.

Starting May 4, passengers will also see changes to ticketing. SmartLink cards will be phased out by the end of the year, with unlimited ride passes shifting to the TAPP tap-to-pay system. Discounted bulk tickets will remain available through TAPP, offering savings for frequent travellers. From May 17, 2026, all four PATH lines will run seven days a week for the first time in nearly 25 years. Weekend travellers will benefit from direct services between Journal Square and 33rd Street, as well as from Hoboken to the World Trade Center. The base fare will continue rising by £0.20 each January until it reaches £3.25 in 2029. Officials state the increases are necessary to maintain and improve the ageing transit system.

The fare adjustments take effect on May 4, alongside expanded weekend services and digital ticketing updates. Over the next three years, the PATH Forward project aims to deliver a more reliable network with upgraded infrastructure. Passengers will see gradual price changes as the modernisation programme rolls out.
