Philippines launches toll rebates to ease fuel costs for transport and freight

A new rebate program has launched to help public transport and freight vehicles cope with rising fuel costs. The initiative follows President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.'s directive to freeze fare increases and introduce financial relief. Drivers of qualified vehicles will now receive weekly discounts on toll fees across major expressways.

The program took effect on 23 March, offering rebates on NLEX, SLEX, and STAR expressways. It targets three vehicle categories: Class 1 (jeepneys), Class 2 (buses), and Class 3 (freight trucks). Exact registration numbers for these classes remain unclear, as the Department of Transportation has not released detailed breakdowns.

Under the scheme, Class 1 vehicles like jeepneys can save up to PHP18 per end-to-end trip. Class 2 buses may receive rebates of up to PHP47, while Class 3 freight trucks could benefit by as much as PHP72. The discounts will be distributed weekly for an initial two-month period, with a possible extension pending review. The move aims to stabilise commuter fares and reduce the cost of transporting goods. By easing financial pressure on drivers, the government hopes to prevent further price hikes for passengers and consumers.

The rebate system will run for two months before officials assess its impact. If successful, the program could be extended to provide longer-term support. For now, eligible drivers will see immediate savings on toll charges, helping offset the effects of high fuel prices.
