The Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) in Bremerhaven has appointed Hajo Eicken as its new scientific director. He will take up the role on 20 March before officially leading the institute from 2026. A native of Bremerhaven, Eicken is widely recognised as a leading expert in sea ice and polar research.
Eicken's career began at the AWI itself, where he researched oceanic and atmospheric physics until 1997. After earning his doctorate from the University of Bremen in 1990, he later spent a decade as director at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. His work there strengthened his reputation in Arctic science.
From 2026, his leadership at AWI will focus on Arctic marine research, ice dynamics, and sustainable polar resources. International cooperation will play a key role, particularly through projects like the Multidisciplinary Drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climate (MOSAiC). Partnerships with the USA, Russia, and EU climate initiatives will also be prioritised.
Eicken plans to work closely with researchers, policymakers, and industry to shape climate change strategies. His goals include advising authorities on water and coastal protection. The appointment has already drawn praise from high-profile figures, including Federal Research Minister Dorothee Bär and Helmholtz Association President Martin Keller, who called him an outstanding choice.
Eicken's return to Bremerhaven marks a new phase for the AWI. His expertise in sea ice and collaborative approach will guide the institute's research and policy efforts. The focus on international partnerships is set to expand the AWI's influence in global climate science.
