Flood Alert Level 1 Reached in the Prignitz - Prignitz braces as rising river levels trigger Alert Level 1 flooding
Minor flooding has hit Prignitz in northwestern Brandenburg after heavy rain and melting snow pushed river levels higher. Authorities declared Alert Level 1, meaning floodplains and meadows near waterways are affected but homes remain safe for now.
The first warnings were triggered in mid-February 2026 when the Stepenitz and Dömnitz rivers surpassed their initial alert thresholds. Gauges at Meyenburg and Pritzwalk recorded rising water, prompting local action. By February 18, levels peaked at Alert Level 2 in areas like Plattenburg and Stepenitz before stabilising and receding by February 22.
Local teams distributed sandbags, prepared evacuations in low-lying zones, and closed some roads. Monitoring stations operated around the clock to track changes. Now, more rain is forecast for Monday and Tuesday, which could push levels up again in the catchment area.
Despite the earlier peak, no major flooding occurred. Residents were urged to stay alert as water continues to rise at key gauges.
The situation remains under control, with no direct threat to properties so far. Authorities are keeping a close watch as further rainfall may worsen conditions in the coming days.
