£800M MESH energy hub accelerates with new financing and national backing
The MESH project, an £800 million offshore energy hub on the Lancashire coast, has taken a major step forward. A recent financing deal with a global investor has sped up early development work. The government has also recognised its importance by designating it a project of national significance. Max Williams, the CFO of EnergyPathways, has led the push to advance MESH since joining in April 2025. With three decades of experience in energy and natural resources, he has secured reliable equity backing and kept stakeholders focused on progress. His background as a Chartered Accountant has helped steer the project’s financial strategy.
The hub will combine long-duration energy storage, gas, and green hydrogen production in one facility. However, moving from the current pre-FEED stage to a Final Investment Decision remains a challenge. Williams emphasises the need for strong teamwork across all disciplines to keep the project on track. A key hurdle is ensuring all parties—including government bodies—stay aligned and supportive. While AI plays a limited role in accounting for now, its use is expected to grow as EnergyPathways expands.
The signing of the financing agreement has accelerated MESH’s early-stage work. The project now holds national significance, backed by both private investment and government recognition. Its success will depend on maintaining stakeholder unity and securing further capital before construction can begin.
