Public transport needs €4 million in additional funding in wake of soaring fuel prices

Public transport faces cuts as fuel costs surge beyond budgets

Public transport operators in the region are facing financial strain due to rising fuel costs. Without extra funding, some bus services may be partially suspended to cover the unexpected expenses. The government has recognised the issue but is waiting for more details before acting. Fuel prices have risen sharply, pushing up operating costs for regional transport. Currently, fuel makes up 25% of public transport expenses, creating an unplanned shortfall. Last year’s budgets did not account for this increase, leaving operators with an extra €4 million funding gap.

The transport group IIL has already cut €400,000 from its budget. Another €400,000 in savings is still needed to avoid service reductions. One proposal involves suspending bus services for around seven days during national holidays.

Finding further savings has proven difficult. Authorities have struggled to identify reasonable areas to reduce costs without affecting services. The government has requested more precise financial data before deciding on additional support. A final decision on extra state funding is expected in the autumn. Regional transport now requires an additional €4.2 million to maintain current service levels. If funding is not secured, partial suspensions of bus routes remain a possibility. The outcome will depend on the government’s review of the financial details provided.
