Rail chaos looms as Nizhny Novgorod–Kazan trains face mass cancellations

Major rail disruptions will hit commuters travelling between Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan this spring. Track repairs will force the cancellation of multiple trains over several days in March and April. With no reliable alternatives available, passengers face significant travel challenges across the 400-kilometre route.

Russian Railways has announced the suspension of key services on the Gorky Railway line. On March 30 and April 2, 6, 9, 13, 16, 20, 23, and 27, a total of 16 trains will not run. The canceled services include Nos. 7001, 7002, 7004, 7006, 7019, 7020, 7022, and 7024 on the Nizhny Novgorod–Kazan route, as well as Nos. 7007, 7009, 7011, 7012, 7013, 7015, 7017, and 7018 on the return Kazan–Nizhny Novgorod line.

In addition to the cancellations, some routes from Arzamas to Surovatikha Station will operate on shortened schedules. The outages leave travellers with no practical transport options between the two cities. No replacement buses, ferries, or flights offer sufficient capacity or frequency to cover the gap. Normally, the rail journey between Nizhny Novgorod and Kazan takes five to seven hours. Without trains, commuters must find alternative ways to cover the 400-kilometre distance.

The cancellations will affect thousands of passengers who rely on these services for work, study, or personal travel. With no viable alternatives in place, many may need to postpone trips or arrange lengthy detours. Russian Railways has not yet announced any temporary solutions for the disrupted dates.
