RE44 rail line reactivation delayed by unexpected bridge flaws and project setbacks

The planned reactivation of the RE44 rail line has hit another setback. Originally set to reopen in December 2026, the project now faces delays after engineers uncovered unexpected structural problems in key bridges along the route. Authorities have confirmed that repairs will take longer than first anticipated.

The issues first came to light during routine inspections and visual checks of existing bridges. By the end of 2025, further investigations revealed deeper flaws, particularly in the bridge abutments. These findings meant more extensive repairs were needed than initially planned.

Renovation concepts are now being reworked and must be approved by the relevant authorities. The goal remains to push the project forward as quickly as possible, though safety and quality standards will not be compromised. Meanwhile, major construction work scheduled for 2027 on the stretch between Moers and Oberhausen could require full closures of certain sections, further impacting the line's future operation.

Dr. René Zweigel, Managing Director of Niederrheinbahn, acknowledged the frustration this delay will cause. Many passengers had been expecting the line to reopen on time, with no prior indication of potential hold-ups.

The RE44 line's return to service has been pushed back due to unforeseen structural weaknesses. Revised renovation plans are being finalised, but no new timeline has yet been confirmed. The delays will affect both construction schedules and future train operations on the route.
