Renault strengthens climate pledges with stricter 2035 emissions targets
Renault Group has renewed its climate commitments with updated science-based targets. The new goals, approved by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), aim to cut emissions sharply by 2035. The company also plans to reach net zero carbon across its entire value chain by 2050. Renault first adopted science-based climate targets in 2019, becoming the first carmaker to do so. Now, the group has set stricter goals to limit global warming to well below 2°C, with efforts to align with a 1.5°C trajectory.
The updated targets include reducing emissions from operations (scopes 1 and 2) by 72% by 2035 compared to 2019. Product-related emissions (scope 3) must also drop by 57% within the same timeframe—an increase from the previous 40% reference target. By 2030, Renault plans to launch 16 new electric models and cut energy use per vehicle by 25%. The company will also boost battery energy density by 10% to 40% and use 30% recycled materials in production.
The new SBTi-approved targets set clear benchmarks for Renault’s climate action. With net zero emissions planned by 2050, the group is accelerating its shift toward cleaner operations and products. The focus remains on cutting emissions across manufacturing, supply chains, and vehicle performance.
