Rhine Valley Railway's four-track upgrade transforms travel between Müllheim and Auggen

The Rhine Valley Railway has undergone a major upgrade between Müllheim and Auggen. Completed on March 31, 2026, the project expands the route to four tracks over six kilometres. The improvements aim to boost capacity, speed and reliability for passengers.

Construction crews added two new tracks alongside the existing lines, which were also modernised. The upgraded route now supports speeds of up to 250 km/h (155 mph), helping trains run faster and more smoothly. Twelve bridges were either rebuilt or expanded, while eight kilometres of noise barriers were installed to reduce disruption for nearby residents.

Both Müllheim (Markgräflerland) station and Auggen halt now feature step-free access, with platforms adjusted to match train heights. This ensures easier boarding for all passengers, including those with mobility needs. Inside the stations, modern passenger information displays provide clearer updates on arrivals, departures and delays. Behind the scenes, an electronic signal box and new switch connections improve operational flexibility. These changes help reduce bottlenecks and allow more trains to run without delays. The upgrades are expected to stabilise schedules and improve punctuality across the route.

The four-track expansion increases capacity for both passenger and freight services. While the full impact on freight traffic—particularly between Karlsruhe and Italy—has yet to be documented, the project marks a significant step in modernising the Rhine Valley Railway. The completed work now allows for faster, more reliable journeys along this key route.
