Rio Tinto's bold tech and sustainability push reshapes global mining

Rio Tinto, once seen as a traditional mining company, is now shifting towards technology and sustainability. The firm has adopted digital tools and green initiatives to stand out in the industry. Investors and analysts have taken notice, boosting its market position over rivals like BHP and Vale.

Around 2020, Rio Tinto launched a strategy focused on digital innovation and sustainability. Since then, its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) rating has risen 15% higher than competitors, according to MSCI data from 2020 to 2025. Analysts now favour the company more strongly, with 72% recommending it as a buy—compared to 65% for BHP and 58% for Vale. Its share valuation has also climbed by 20%, driven by leadership in AI-driven mining and net-zero targets.

The company is moving beyond traditional mining by using remote control and real-time monitoring to streamline operations. In Australia's Pilbara region, it runs one of the world's largest fleets of autonomous haul trucks. These technologies help optimise production and supply chains, reducing costs and environmental impact.

Rio Tinto is also expanding its focus on future-facing commodities. Copper and lithium, essential for electric vehicles and renewable energy, are now priorities. New projects in Mongolia and the U.S. aim to increase production of these materials. However, securing permits and gaining public support remain hurdles for these expansions.

In aluminium production, the company is pushing for greener methods. Initiatives like RenewAl and the ELYSIS joint venture aim to cut emissions and improve sustainability. These efforts align with its broader goal of becoming a tech-driven, low-carbon business.

Rio Tinto's shift towards technology and sustainability has reshaped its market image. Investors now see it as more than a commodity supplier—a platform for future growth. The company's focus on efficiency, green initiatives, and high-demand materials continues to set it apart in the mining sector.
