Romania Secures Control of Moldova's Key Danube Port in Strategic Deal

Romania's state-owned Constanta Port Authority has won the bid to take over Danube Logistics, the main operator of Moldova's Giurgiulești port. The deal follows a competitive tender process led by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). Over 70% of Moldova's maritime trade currently flows through this key Danube-Black Sea hub.

Giurgiulești port has grown rapidly since its privatisation and expansion between 2010 and 2012. Annual cargo volumes surged from around 0.5 million tons to over 2 million tons by 2023. This growth has boosted Moldova's ability to export grain and oil products while strengthening imports via the Danube.

The acquisition will bring the port under Romanian management, with plans to modernise its infrastructure. Upgrades will include new terminals, rail connections, and digital systems. These improvements aim to integrate Giurgiulești more tightly into European transport networks.

Romania's control of the port also reinforces its influence over Central and Eastern European trade routes. The move is expected to enhance Moldova's economic stability and regional trade links.

The takeover marks a significant step in connecting Moldova's trade with wider European corridors. Modernisation efforts could further increase cargo capacity and efficiency. For Romania, the deal solidifies its role as a key player in regional logistics and transport.
