Russia and China deepen Far East economic ties with record investments
Russia and China have strengthened their economic ties, with trade and investment growing rapidly in the Far East. The region has become a major hub for cooperation, backed by special incentives to attract foreign capital. Recent discussions at the AmurExpo-2026 forum in Blagoveshchensk highlighted the deepening partnership between the two nations. The Far East has introduced a unique system of preferential regimes to boost foreign investment. Currently, 140 projects involve international partners, with Chinese investors participating in 94 of them. Their total investments in the region now exceed 1 trillion rubles.
A new special regime, the International Advanced Development Territory, was created to further attract foreign capital. Early pilot projects under this scheme include an industrial park in Amur Oblast and a Russian-Chinese agribusiness park in Primorye.
Trade between the Far East and China has surged, nearly doubling in recent years. By 2023, bilateral trade reached over 1.7 trillion rubles. China remains Russia’s key trade and investment partner, strengthened by their shared 4,000-kilometre border.
The AmurExpo forum serves as a key platform for discussions on trade, investment, logistics, and industrial cooperation. Recent talks at the event in Blagoveshchensk focused on expanding economic ties. Additionally, a meeting of the Russian-Chinese Intergovernmental Commission in Harbin further explored ways to deepen collaboration.
The Amur Region plays a central role in the Far East’s development. Major infrastructure projects and investment initiatives continue to drive growth in the area. The partnership between Russia and China in the Far East is expanding through trade, investment, and special economic regimes. With Chinese involvement in nearly 100 projects and trade volumes rising, the region’s economic future looks increasingly tied to cross-border cooperation. New incentives and forums like AmurExpo are expected to bring further growth in the coming years.
