Russia-China Pogranichny Checkpoint Reopens After Major Expansion on June 29
The Pogranichny International Road Checkpoint is set to reopen on June 29, 2026, after a major upgrade. The facility, linking Russia and China, has undergone extensive reconstruction since December 2022. Officials will halt all traffic for two days to complete the final preparations before the relaunch. Work on the checkpoint began in late 2022 under a government-funded contract. At its busiest, over 500 workers operated in two shifts to modernise the site. The project aims to boost capacity by increasing vehicle lanes from six to twenty.
To allow for the final technical steps, freight and passenger traffic will stop at 9:00 AM on June 27. During this 52-hour closure, crews will relocate government control agencies and finalise systems. The checkpoint is then scheduled to reopen at 5:00 PM on June 29. The upgrade marks a significant expansion for cross-border travel and trade. Once fully operational, the checkpoint will handle far greater volumes of vehicles and goods.
The suspension of traffic will last until the checkpoint’s relaunch on June 29. After reopening, the expanded facility will improve efficiency for both passenger and freight movements. The project reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure along this key international route.
