Russia's new mega-shipyard in Vladivostok to build LNG carriers and tankers
A major new shipyard is set to be built in Promezhutochnaya Bay, near Vladivostok, as part of a project led by the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC). The facility will focus on constructing large commercial vessels, including LNG carriers, tankers, and container ships. Preparations for the project have now begun in earnest. The shipyard’s planned location sits within Vladivostok’s municipal area, covering a closed water zone of around 80 hectares and a 130-hectare production site. USC is refining the initial details needed for the conceptual design while pushing to include the project in Russia’s list of strategic initiatives. This classification would grant access to incentives and benefits for large-scale construction.
The facility’s design includes a four-berth shipbuilding hall, a 50,000-ton floating dock, and a 350-by-90-meter dry dock. An assembly and welding workshop will also be built, capable of handling sections as large as 48 by 48 metres. Once operational, the shipyard is expected to process up to 250,000 tons of metal annually and produce as many as 12 ships per year. The project marks a significant expansion of Russia’s shipbuilding capabilities. With its advanced infrastructure and high output potential, the new shipyard aims to meet growing demand for large-tonnage commercial vessels. Construction timelines and further details will depend on final approvals and funding arrangements.
