RWE's Rhine pipeline project kicks off with March construction and road closures

RWE Power has initiated early preparations for its Rhine water transport pipeline project. The work will cause traffic disruptions in several areas of Rheinfeld starting from March 2. Residents can attend an information session on March 12 to learn more about the upcoming construction phases.

The first stage of site setup for the new pumping station will commence on March 2. This phase includes earthworks, road construction, and utility installations. The project is part of the larger RWE Rheinwassertransport-Pipeline, which aims to transport cooling water from the Rhine to the Niederaußem and Neurath power plants.

Different roads will be affected at various times. From March 2 to March 22, An den Peschen and Wirtschaftsweg will experience disruptions. The access road to the pumping station's north side will be closed from March 2 until around April 18. Oberster Monheimer Weg and Deponiestraße will be impacted from March 2 to late June, while the construction site entrance and exit at the landfill, including the new access road, will face delays until approximately August 30. The south-side access to the pumping station will then be affected from April 6 to the end of May.

The wider pipeline project remains in the advanced planning and approval stage. The environmental impact assessment was approved by the North Rhine-Westphalia state environment agency in late 2025. Construction permits are expected by mid-2026, with groundbreaking planned for 2027 and full operation targeted for 2030, subject to final federal water management approvals.

To address local concerns, RWE is hosting an information event on March 12 at the Schützenhaus in Rheinfeld. The session will run from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, giving residents a chance to ask questions about the timeline and impacts of the work.

The preliminary work marks the start of a long-term project that will transform parts of Rheinfeld over the coming years. Traffic changes will roll out in phases, with the first disruptions beginning in early March. The information event on March 12 offers residents an opportunity to stay informed about the construction schedule and its effects on the area.
