S-Bahn Rhein-Main slashes cancellations as hiring surge boosts reliability
S-Bahn Rhein-Main has seen a sharp drop in staff-related cancellations this year. The service, which carries around half a million passengers daily, now reports far fewer delays caused by personnel shortages. Recent hiring efforts and training programmes have helped stabilise operations, though ongoing construction work continues to impact schedules. In early 2026, the reliability of S-Bahn Rhein-Main services reached 89.9%, a noticeable improvement. Staff shortages, which caused 3.2% of cancellations last year, now account for just 0.2% of disruptions. Over 70 new train drivers have been recruited in recent months, with plans to add 30 more annually after they complete training.
Regional rail services in the area have also become more dependable, hitting a 90% reliability rate in the first quarter of 2026. However, DB InfraGO AG has announced around 2,800 construction and maintenance projects across the RMV network for this year. These works are expected to affect punctuality, even as passenger numbers remain high. RMV recorded 839 million journeys in 2025, setting a new record. The network’s growing demand highlights the importance of ongoing improvements, despite the challenges posed by infrastructure upgrades.
The reduction in staff shortages marks a significant step forward for S-Bahn Rhein-Main. With more drivers in place and reliability figures rising, the focus now shifts to managing the impact of extensive construction work. Passengers will continue to see adjustments to schedules as upgrades progress throughout 2026.
