Premiere: Battery-powered trains running between Leipzig and Chemnitz - Saxony's first battery train launches next week on Leipzig-Chemnitz route

Saxony's first battery-powered train, manufactured by Alstom as the Coradia Continental model, will begin regular service next week. The new route connects Leipzig and Chemnitz, marking a regional milestone for sustainable rail travel. The inaugural journey will depart from Chemnitz Central Station at 5:31 a.m., featuring 300 seats and operating in double traction to accommodate higher passenger numbers.

Alstom's Coradia Continental model has been chosen for its reliability and eco-friendly performance. This introduction makes Saxony one of the first regions in Germany to adopt battery trains for scheduled public transport.

The launch of this battery-powered service expands Saxony's green transport options. Passengers on the Leipzig-Chemnitz route will now travel using cleaner, quieter technology. The move aligns with broader efforts to modernise regional rail networks.
