Schönbrunn Palace's historic Engelstor gate reopens with modern upgrades by autumn
The historic Engelstor gate at Schönbrunn Palace will reopen by autumn, offering better access for visitors. The project, led by Tiergarten Schönbrunn, the Schönbrunn Group, the KHM-Museumsverband, and the Austrian Federal Gardens, aims to improve routes for both tourists and locals.
The gate will connect the palace grounds and zoo directly to the Kennedybrücke transport hub and Hietzing underground station. This new route promises shorter and safer journeys for pedestrians, while emergency vehicles will also gain access.
A new gatekeeper's lodge will be built inside the palace walls, based on historical images of the original guardhouse. The lodge will operate year-round to manage entry. Security will be reinforced with a bollard system, matching those already in place at other gates. The total cost of the project is around €650,000. The Schönbrunn Group will cover the expenses for the bollard system, while the remaining costs will be shared by Tiergarten Schönbrunn, the Schönbrunn Group, and the KHM-Museumsverband. The design of the lodge draws inspiration from 18th-century sources, including construction plans and engravings by Abraham and David Herrliberger.
Once completed, the Engelstor will provide a more convenient entrance to Schönbrunn's attractions. The gate's redesign and improved access are set to benefit both daily commuters and tourists visiting the palace and zoo.
