Shaffer Hall reopens with modern upgrades after 2025 renovation

Shaffer Hall has reopened after a major renovation project that began in early 2025. The 60-year-old building now features modern upgrades, including flexible furniture, better air quality, and advanced technology. University leaders have praised the changes as part of a wider push to improve academic spaces across campus. Work on the building started in February 2025, led by SmithGroup, DPR Construction, and Johns Hopkins Facilities and Real Estate. The project wrapped up in time for the spring 2026 semester. Key improvements include wider aisles, height-adjustable podiums, and energy-efficient systems designed to boost indoor air quality.

The renovations align with new university guidelines for learning environments, adopted last year. These standards set a consistent yet adaptable approach for upgrading interdivisional classrooms on the Homewood campus. Upgrades also covered flooring, lighting, A/V equipment, and HVAC systems, alongside refreshed decor and furniture. Executive Vice Provost Stephen Gange highlighted the project's success, noting how the guidelines had shaped Shaffer Hall's transformation. Meanwhile, the Classroom Advisory Committee continues planning further upgrades for other academic spaces.

Shaffer Hall now offers students and staff a more functional and sustainable learning environment. The project serves as a model for future renovations under the university's updated guidelines. Further classroom improvements are expected as the committee moves forward with its plans.
