Silicon Motion's 6nm SM8008 SSD controller redefines data centre efficiency
Silicon Motion has unveiled its latest enterprise SSD controller, the SM8008. Built on TSMC's advanced 6nm process, the new chip promises better power efficiency and high performance for data centres. It follows the company's earlier SM2508, which was the first SSD controller to use this manufacturing technology.
The SM8008 is designed for enterprise applications where low power consumption matters. It uses less than 5 watts while delivering up to 14 GB/s in sequential read speeds and 2.3 million input/output operations per second (IOPS). These figures make it well-suited for boot drives and server workloads that demand both speed and energy savings.
The controller supports a PCIe 5.0 x4 interface and the NVMe 2.0a protocol, ensuring compatibility with the latest storage standards. It also handles NAND flash speeds of up to 3,600 MT/s. Security features include AES-256 encryption, SHA2-512 hashing, RSA-3072 authentication, Secure Boot, and firmware verification—all critical for enterprise environments.
Silicon Motion's move to 6nm follows a broader industry shift, with rival Phison also adopting the process for its own controllers. The company is already preparing its next-generation SM8466, which will push performance further with PCIe 6.0 support, 28 GB/s throughput, and up to 7 million IOPS.
The SM8008 strengthens Silicon Motion's position in the enterprise SSD market with its balance of efficiency, speed, and security. As data centres prioritise both performance and power savings, the controller's 6nm design and advanced features provide a clear upgrade path. The company's upcoming SM8466 suggests even greater capabilities are on the horizon.
