Sochi Airport chaos sparks passenger rights battle amid security delays
Flights at Sochi International Airport are facing significant delays due to tightened security measures. The restrictions have disrupted travel plans, leading to diversions and frustration among passengers. Authorities have now stepped in to ensure affected travellers receive their legal entitlements.
The ongoing delays stem from security-related restrictions imposed at the airport. As a result, some flights have been rerouted to nearby airfields, leaving passengers stranded or facing extended wait times. Russian law, under the Air Code of the Russian Federation (Articles 104–107), guarantees compensation in such cases.
Travellers experiencing delays of over two hours are entitled to accommodation, meals, and financial compensation of up to 25% of their ticket price per hour of delay. For cancelled or diverted flights—even those caused by security measures—passengers can demand a full refund, rebooking, or additional support. These rights apply regardless of force majeure clauses for domestic routes.
To assist affected flyers, mobile help desks have been set up at the airport. Passengers can also report any violations of their rights to the duty prosecutor at the Southern Transport Prosecutor's Office. Transport prosecutors are actively overseeing the situation to ensure airlines and authorities comply with the law.
The delays continue to impact flights in and out of Sochi, with diversions and cancellations adding to the disruption. Passengers are being reminded of their rights to compensation, refunds, and assistance under Russian aviation law. Authorities remain on site to enforce compliance and support those affected.
