Sochi's High-Tech Banana Farming Project to Launch in 2025
Sochi is set to launch an ambitious banana cultivation project in 2025. The initiative will revive subtropical farming in the city while introducing 19 unique banana varieties. These will be grown in high-tech greenhouses and sold exclusively to local markets. Preparations for the project are already underway. Three specialised greenhouses, each spanning around 600 square metres, have been constructed. Inside, automated AI systems will control temperature, humidity, and irrigation to create ideal growing conditions.
The project will cultivate 19 distinct banana types, including both commercial and dessert varieties. Some of these are rare select cultivars known for their unique flavours. From flowering to ripening, each banana plant will take roughly three to three and a half months to mature.
The first harvest is anticipated in July or August. However, due to the fruit’s poor tolerance for long-distance transport, all bananas will be sold locally. This aligns with Sochi’s Choose Sochi-Grown campaign, part of the city’s broader socioeconomic strategy through 2035. The banana project marks a key step in Sochi’s push to expand subtropical agriculture. By using advanced greenhouse technology, the city aims to produce high-quality fruit for its own markets. The initiative also supports long-term goals outlined in Sochi’s development plan for the next decade.
