Solingen's Veloroute 2 sparks backlash over 270 lost parking spaces

Plans for the Veloroute 2 cycle route in Solingen are facing strong opposition from local businesses and residents. The main concern centres on the loss of over 270 parking spaces, which critics argue could harm trade and disrupt daily life. Retailers and service providers have warned that fewer parking options may drive customers away.

The proposed Veloroute 2 project would remove more than 70 parking spots near the City Ring and over 200 along Merscheider Straße. Along the entire route, 142 existing spaces are already set to close. In response, the city has suggested 120 new parking spaces at central locations like Grüner Weg and Ohligs, along with temporary solutions and shuttle services for affected businesses and residents.

Gerlinde Steingrüber, chair of MIT Solingen, has stressed that convenient parking remains vital for local shops and service providers. The group argues that current plans lack proper alternatives for delivery traffic and fail to address potential delays for bus services. They also criticise the absence of public consultation during the planning process. MIT Solingen is now calling on policymakers to reconsider the project. The association wants a more balanced approach that supports cyclists while protecting local businesses and ensuring smooth traffic flow for all road users.

The parking cuts have become the focal point of the debate over Veloroute 2. If implemented, the changes could reduce foot traffic for retailers and create logistical challenges for deliveries. The city's proposed alternatives have so far done little to ease concerns among affected businesses and residents.
