Spirit Airlines collapses, leaving Fort Lauderdale's Terminal 4 deserted
Spirit Airlines has shut down, leaving Terminal 4 at Fort Lauderdale Airport empty. The collapse follows years of financial struggles, with soaring jet fuel prices dealing the final blow. Despite receiving multiple buyout offers, none proved workable for the troubled carrier. The airline’s closure was confirmed after attempts to sell the business failed. Several companies expressed interest, but no viable deals materialised. Employees will receive pay until 2 May, though their health insurance will end immediately.
With Spirit’s exit, other airlines are stepping in to fill the gap. JetBlue, Allegiant, Frontier, and Breeze Airways have all announced plans to expand at Fort Lauderdale. JetBlue will add 11 new routes, Breeze Airways eight, and Frontier nine. The moves are expected to create job openings for former Spirit staff. Passengers, however, are bracing for higher fares. Sue Zachary, a frequent flyer, worries that reduced competition could push prices up. Industry watchers share similar concerns, noting that Spirit’s low-cost model had kept fares in check for years.
The shutdown leaves thousands of workers facing uncertainty, though new airline expansions may offer some relief. Fort Lauderdale’s Terminal 4 now sits vacant, while rival carriers prepare to take over its gates. For travellers, the loss of Spirit’s budget options could mean fewer choices and steeper ticket costs.
