Starving swan's miraculous recovery after rare veterinary rescue
A rare patient arrived at the Gelendzhik veterinary service in critical condition—a severely weakened swan. The bird was discovered on a frozen lake, too exhausted from hunger to show its usual wariness.
The swan was found in a dire state, emaciated and barely responsive. Its pale mucous membranes pointed to anaemia and an electrolyte imbalance. A closer examination revealed a heavy infestation of feather mites around its head and neck.
Veterinarians acted quickly, treating the mites with antiparasitic medication. They also gave the swan vitamins to boost its immune and digestive systems. No other cases of injured or weakened wild birds had been recorded in the Krasnodar region in 2023, making this rescue unusual.
After weeks of care, the swan regained strength. It was sheltered until the snow melted, allowing for a safe return to the wild.
The swan's release marked the end of a rare and successful rescue effort. Its recovery highlights the importance of veterinary intervention for wildlife in distress. The case also stands out as the only documented rescue of its kind in the region last year.
