Südwestfalen transit strike halts nearly all bus and tram lines this week
Bus and tram services across Südwestfalen will face major disruptions due to an upcoming strike. The SWK Verkehrsverbund has warned passengers of widespread cancellations and changes to routes. Alternative transport options will be available, but delays and limited services are expected throughout the affected period.
The strike will begin at the start of operations each day and continue until the end of service. All bus lines, except routes 047 and 062, will be cancelled entirely. Even these two routes may see additional suspensions, leaving passengers with fewer options.
Tram lines 041, 042, 043, and 044 will not run at all. Instead, replacement buses will operate at the usual tram frequencies. However, some stops on lines 042, 043, and 044 will not be served by these buses, forcing passengers to use nearby alternative stops or transfer between services.
NightExpress services after 12:30 a.m. on Friday will also be suspended, following the reduced Monday-to-Thursday timetable. Passengers are advised to check the emergency schedule on SWK's website at swk.de or use the SWK app for live updates on delays and cancellations.
This is not the first time the region has faced such disruptions. Over the past two years, staff shortages led to repeated strikes and service outages. In October 2024, Siegen experienced a three-day strike, while Lennestadt saw partial cancellations in March 2025. Similar issues also affected the Hochsauerlandkreis region, with disruptions lasting between two and five days.
The strike will impact daily travel for many in Südwestfalen. Replacement buses and emergency timetables will help, but passengers should prepare for delays and possible cancellations. SWK has urged commuters to plan ahead by checking real-time updates through their app or website before travelling.
