Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension breaks ground with 2029 completion goal
Construction has officially begun on the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension. The project will stretch 16 kilometres from King George Station in Surrey to Langley City Centre, adding eight new stations along the route. Once complete, it will link residents to key destinations across Metro Vancouver.
The expansion will extend the existing Expo Line, connecting passengers to other SkyTrain services in Burnaby, New Westminster, Port Moody, parts of Coquitlam, and downtown Vancouver. Travel times between Langley City Centre and downtown Vancouver are expected to drop to roughly an hour.
Foundation work has already finished at six of the eight planned stations. Crews are currently active at 152 Street Station, while preparations are just getting underway at Willowbrook Station. The entire project remains on track for completion in late 2029. B.C. Premier David Eby highlighted the project’s goal of cutting commute times and easing daily travel stress. Transportation Minister Mike Farnworth added that the new line would reduce road congestion while offering a dependable transit option for the growing region.
The Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension is set to improve transit access for thousands of residents. With faster connections to major hubs and a scheduled finish in 2029, the project marks a significant step in expanding Metro Vancouver’s rapid transit network. Construction progress will continue over the next five years.
