Swiss-British alliance crafts recyclable paper bottles to replace plastic

A Swiss paper manufacturer is teaming up with a British firm to produce eco-friendly beverage bottles. Perlen Paper, based in Lucerne, will work with Pulpex to create fully recyclable paper bottles at a local mill. The partnership aims to cut plastic and glass waste while slashing carbon emissions by up to 90%.

The new paper bottles will replace traditional packaging for drinks like juices, water, milk, wine, and spirits. They will also serve cosmetics and liquid food products. Designed to be lightweight yet sturdy, the bottles are fully recyclable and built for sustainability.

Pulpex has set an ambitious target: replacing over one billion plastic and glass bottles with paper alternatives by 2030. To meet this goal, the company plans to open 12 more production sites worldwide within the next six years. The CEO of Perlen Paper highlighted the project's potential to boost a circular economy while adding value to the packaging industry. Both companies see the collaboration as a fast track to bringing sustainable solutions to market. Pulpex has welcomed the partnership, emphasising its role in accelerating the shift away from single-use plastics and heavy glass containers.

The Lucerne mill will begin manufacturing the paper bottles soon. If successful, the initiative could drastically reduce waste and emissions in the beverage sector. The first products packaged in these bottles are expected to reach consumers in the coming years.
