Swiss investors embrace ETF savings plans for long-term wealth growth

ETF savings plans are gaining popularity in Switzerland as a simple way to invest in the stock market today. These plans allow regular, fixed-amount contributions into exchange-traded funds (ETFs) that track major market benchmarks like the MSCI World. With around 1,500 ETFs available in the country, more investors are turning to this low-cost, automated approach for long-term wealth building.

An ETF savings plan works by letting investors put money into one or more ETFs at set intervals. This method removes the need to pick individual stocks while still offering broad market exposure. Over the past five years, ETFs have attracted the majority of new investments in Switzerland, now holding 26% of total fund assets despite making up just 16% of retail funds.

The appeal lies in several key benefits. These plans are easy to start, encourage disciplined saving through automation, and provide diversification at a lower cost than traditional fund savings plans. Fees, however, can vary widely between providers, with some offering options from as little as 1€ per investment.

Yet, there are risks to consider. Market volatility means returns are never guaranteed, and investors must be patient, as growth takes time. Hidden costs, tax implications, and psychological challenges—such as overconfidence in a plan's security—can also pose problems. Unlike actively managed funds, ETFs do not aim to outperform the market, which may limit flexibility for some.

Looking ahead, nearly half of Swiss investors are expected to put money into ETFs within the next two years. The market continues to expand, with about 8% of new ETFs added annually, reflecting growing demand for accessible, passive investment options.

ETF savings plans offer a straightforward, cost-effective way to build wealth over time. With a wide selection of funds and increasing adoption, they have become a preferred choice for many Swiss investors. However, understanding fees, risks, and long-term commitments remains essential before starting a plan.
