Swiss Railways Expands Capacity for Holiday Travel Surge

Swiss Federal Railways (SBB) is increasing train capacity to handle the holiday travel rush. The company expects high passenger numbers and possible congestion during the peak period.

To manage demand, extra services and adjustments have been introduced across key routes. SBB will add 58 extra trains along the Gotthard route. More carriages will also run on regular services to provide around 130,000 additional seats—a 25% rise from last year.

Some connections have been revised, including more TILO RE80 services between Locarno and Milano Porta Garibaldi via Varese. However, construction near Lenzburg will disrupt travel on both weekends. Long-distance trains between Olten and Zurich will face diversions and schedule changes.

Passengers are urged to book tickets early and reserve seats where available. Bike transport on busy routes, especially through the Gotthard Base Tunnel, will also require prior booking. The changes aim to ease pressure during the holiday travel surge. With extra trains and adjusted schedules, SBB hopes to reduce delays and overcrowding. Travellers should check updates and plan journeys ahead of time.
