Swiss Zoo Debuts Electric Tram to Replace Beloved Horse-Drawn Ride
Knies Children's Zoo in Rapperswil, St. Gallen, has unveiled a new electric tram to replace its historic Rösslitram. The updated ride, designed by apprentices from Stadler, now carries visitors along a 480-metre route through the zoo. The horses that once pulled the old tram have since retired.
The original Rösslitram first began operating in 1962, pulled by horses along the zoo's paths. After decades of service, the decision was made to modernise the attraction with an electric-powered replacement. The new tram moves at a gentle speed of around five kilometres per hour, ensuring a relaxed journey for passengers.
The vehicle itself was built by apprentices from train manufacturer Stadler, while track construction trainees from Südostbahn added a new siding with a switch. This allows the vintage tram car to be coupled to the new model when needed. The design for the electric train lock system was developed by Ingenieurbüro XYZ AG in partnership with the zoo's technical team, with the project finalised and officially opened in late 2025.
The tram's capacity has also increased—it can now accommodate up to 20 children or 16 adults per trip. Visitors will continue to enjoy the same scenic route, but with a quieter, more efficient ride.
The new tram marks the end of an era for the horse-drawn Rösslitram while keeping the tradition alive in a modern form. With its larger capacity and smooth electric operation, the attraction is set to remain a favourite for zoo visitors. The project also highlights the skills of young apprentices in rail engineering and design.
