Sword Health's AI-Powered App Redefines Patient Care with Human Expertise

Sword Health, the Portuguese unicorn valued at $4 billion, is rolling out a major update to its app. Known internally as Chapter 2, the redesign introduces a three-way chat system involving an AI assistant, the patient, and a physical therapist. The company aims to blend technology with human expertise for more personalised care.

Product Manager Catarina Farinha recently discussed the changes on The Future of the Future podcast, hosted by journalist Pedro Miguel Coelho. The full conversation is now available on Expresso, SIC, SIC Notícias, and major podcast platforms.

The updated app centres on Phoenix, an AI chatbot designed to assist patients while maintaining clear boundaries. It openly acknowledges its limitations and defers to clinicians for medical decisions. When uncertain, Phoenix prompts the involvement of a human therapist, ensuring expertise remains at the core of care.

Sword Health stresses that a physical therapist is always part of the process. The company uses AI to expand access to care but keeps human oversight for critical moments. The goal is to create interactions that feel deeply human, even when supported by technology.

Farinha highlighted the balance between automation and professional judgement. While AI handles routine guidance, complex or sensitive cases are escalated to therapists. The redesign reflects Sword Health's commitment to scaling care without compromising quality or safety.

The new app version is set to enhance patient support through a mix of AI efficiency and clinical expertise. Phoenix's role is strictly defined, with final decisions resting with healthcare professionals. The update aligns with Sword Health's strategy of combining technology with human-centred care.
