U.S. job market defies expectations with 115,000 new positions in April 2025
The U.S. job market showed stronger-than-expected growth in April 2025. Employers added 115,000 new positions, well above the 65,000 jobs predicted by economists. Despite the gains, the unemployment rate held steady at 4.3% for the month. Healthcare led job creation with 37,000 new roles, followed by transportation and warehousing at 30,000. Retail trade also saw a boost, contributing 22,000 jobs to the total. However, the information sector struggled, shedding 13,000 positions.
The overall unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.3%, leaving 7.4 million Americans out of work. Among demographic groups, teenagers faced the highest jobless rate at 14.4%. Black Americans saw an unemployment rate of 7.3%, higher than the national average.
April’s job growth exceeded expectations, with key sectors like healthcare and logistics driving gains. Yet unemployment rates for teenagers and Black Americans stayed above the national figure. The mixed results highlight both progress and ongoing challenges in the labour market.
