UK retailers race to upgrade payments for speed and flexibility
Speed and flexibility are now essential in UK retail. Customers expect smooth experiences at every step, from browsing to checkout. Businesses are responding by updating payment systems and rethinking how transactions work.
A recent study shows that 91% of retail leaders see adapting to customer behaviour as a top priority. Shoppers now demand convenience, quick service, and flexible payment options. Nearly half of businesses report growing interest in mobile or on-the-go checkouts.
Checkout speed remains a key focus, with 77% of retailers making it a daily priority. But efficiency doesn’t stop there—77% also value integrated reporting and reconciliation to streamline operations. Meanwhile, 80% say accepting all major cards and digital wallets is crucial for keeping sales running smoothly. Expectations for payment providers have risen sharply. Eighty-four per cent of retail leaders now demand more from them than they did two years ago. Looking ahead, 44% believe faster access to funds will soon be a competitive must-have. The shift reflects a broader move away from traditional fixed tills toward more adaptable solutions. The push for speed extends beyond the checkout. Retailers recognise that every part of the customer journey—from service and fulfilment to issue resolution—must keep pace with modern expectations.
UK retailers are investing in faster, more flexible payment systems to meet evolving demands. Customers now judge businesses on how quickly and smoothly transactions happen. For many, staying competitive will depend on keeping up with these changes.
