UK trials AI speed cameras that detect phone use and seatbelt violations

A new AI-powered speed camera system is undergoing trials in the UK. Called Reedspeed Rentio, it goes beyond tracking speed by detecting mobile phone use, seatbelt violations, and red light offences. The technology has already sparked debate about road safety and privacy. Over 100 of these advanced cameras have been installed across parts of the UK. They use real-time number plate recognition to check vehicle insurance, tax, and registration against official databases. The system can also monitor multiple lanes simultaneously, capturing clear images even in poor weather or low light.

Not all units are currently issuing fines, as some remain in a testing phase to evaluate performance and gather evidence. The cameras build on existing enforcement trends in Europe, where automated systems are becoming more common. Spain, for example, already uses fixed speed cameras and devices that detect phone use or seatbelt offences in certain areas.

Critics argue that such detailed monitoring of drivers and passengers may overstep boundaries. However, supporters highlight the potential to reduce deaths and serious injuries by targeting high-risk behaviours. Spain’s traffic authority, the DGT, has long emphasised distractions and seatbelt non-compliance as major safety concerns. While no nationwide rollout of the Reedspeed Rentio system has been confirmed in Spain, the shift towards automated enforcement is clear. The UK trials demonstrate how AI can expand traffic monitoring beyond traditional speed checks. For now, the focus remains on testing its accuracy and effectiveness in real-world conditions.
