A rare natural spectacle has drawn crowds to Gunlock State Park in Utah. The park's waterfalls, which only appear a few times each decade, began flowing again in late February 2023. Heavy winter rains and a wildfire's aftermath caused the reservoir above to overflow, creating the temporary falls. The waterfalls last appeared in 2019 and have only been seen about 10 to 15 times since 1976. They form when the Gunlock Reservoir spills over the rocky terrain below. This time, record rainfall between October 2022 and January 2023 filled the reservoir beyond capacity. A wildfire had also stripped the area of vegetation, reducing the land's ability to absorb water.
By early March 2023, around 10,000 visitors had already hiked the 1.2-mile (1.9 km) round-trip trail to see the falls. The 30-minute walk leads to a dramatic scene, though officials warn of slippery rocks and unpredictable currents. Despite a lower-than-average snowpack, the waterfalls continue to flow strongly. Gunlock State Park remains open year-round, offering swimming, kayaking, fishing, and camping. The sudden surge in visitors—nearly matching the total for all of March 2022—shows the waterfalls' rare appeal.
The falls could disappear once the reservoir levels drop. For now, they provide a striking sight for those willing to make the short hike. Park authorities remind visitors to stay cautious near the fast-moving water and unstable ground.
